The latest around here!

Hello, Hello! I really try to get to my blog often but I just can not do it. I have been so busy lately, with things around the house, volunteering for school field trips for both kids, and also I’m trying to sell my stuff (sewing) through friends and contacts i make, and that leaves not much time for blogging, trimming my hair, or have a romantic dinner with my husband, who happens to have a lot on his plate these days as well.

Enough lamenting about my chores and all, I will share now some images in a random order of what I have done since July 22 I think was the last time I blogged.

Hola, Hola! De verdad que trato de venir a mi blog más seguido pero se me hace difícil. He estado bien ocupada con cosas de la casa ( lo usual) voluntariado en paseos fuera de la escuela de los niños, y también estoy medio vendiendo lo que hago de mis costuras a través de amigos y contactos que he hecho, y pues todo eso no me deja mucho tiempo libre para venir a mi blog, ir a cortarme las puntas del pelo, o tan siquiera tener una cena romántica con mi marido, quién por cierto tiene más tarea y cosas de que preocuparse en estos días.

Bueno, ya me dejo de lamentos sobre cuestiones cotidianas, y me voy de un solo a compartir algunas imágenes que tengo, no están en orden cronológico pero muestra lo que he hecho desde Julio 22 que creo fue la última vez que pasé por aquí.

My best friend came to visit us a month and a half ago, and did some tourism around the city. Since we moved here we have avoided all the famous touristic stops in the city, the crowds, the lineups, the traffic, are not really our favorite things to do. We prefer to go to a park, have a picnic and play with the kids, or go to the beach or have a nice hike in any of the state parks ( there are lots and very nice ones).

This visit was the first week of September and we had such a good time. I can not wait until we meet again and remember good old times when we were only 14 years old!

In the last photo above the text here, we wanted a nice photo of the two of us together, but Gaby photobombed us!!!!

Mi mejor amiga vino a visitarnos hace como un mes y medio, y hicimos turismo en la ciudad. Desde que vinimos aquí hace casi tres años, jamás habíamos visitado algunos de los lugares turísticos que tiene la ciudad, los hemos evadido porque no somos muy amigos de las multitudes, colas para entrar a restaurantes or algun tipo de atracción, el tráfico, no son nuestras paradas favoritas. Preferimos ir a un parque y tener un picnic allí y jugar con los niños, o ir a la playa o ir a una caminata en alguno de los parques estatales de aquí ( porque hay muchos y muy lindos).

Esta visita tan especial fue en la primera semana de Septiembre y nos la pasamos muy bien. Ya no me aguanto por que nos volvamos a reunir y poder recordar viejos tiempos como cuando teníamos 14 añitos!

En la última foto arriba de este texto, ambas queríamos una foto del recuerdo de las dos, pero la Gaby nos robó la photo!

I had my first arts and craft show in Santa Cruz with some of my sewing. I made bibs for babies, eco bags, snack bags, pencil cases, and some girls clothing. It was a very nice experience!!

Tuve mi primer show de manualidades y artes en Santa Cruz con algunas de mis costuras. Hice baberos, bolsas ecológicas de manta cruda, bolsas para refrigerios o lunch, bolsas portalápices, y ropa para niñas. Fue una experiencia muy bonita!!

This is some of the stuff I made. I love how they all turned out.

I have a few favorites, like the Monet dress right on the right corner below the polka dot one. The Frida Khalo skirts and the skulls are super cute and made the hem out of voile  from Free Spirit Fabrics that I got at Hawthornethreads a few months ago.

Esto es una muestra de lo que hice para el show. Me encanta como me salieron.

Yo tengo algunos favoritos entre ellos, como el vestido Monet en la esquina derecha justo abajo del vestido con puntitos. La falda de Frida Khalo y las calaveras es super linda y el ruedo se los hice de un algodón muy fino llamado Voile de la marca Free Spirit Fabrics que compré hace meses en Hawthornethreads.

Then I made some clothes for Gaby, the school year started and I felt the need of making a few essential pieces for her, and since the weather permits us with wearing shorts and tank tops from time to time here, then I don’t hesitate too much and go for it. This shorts are from the Japanese Book Happy Homemade Vol. 2. I made them out this fabulous fabric that I got from Miss Matatabi, is a canvas but not heavy weight. The print, the feel and the colors are perfect for Gaby who happens to be entering the Pastel Stage lately.

Luego me puse a hacer una ropa para Gaby, el año escolar ya había iniciado y sentí la necesidad de hacerle algunas prendas esenciales, y ya que el clima aquí no es tan rudo y nos permite usar shorts y camisetas sin mangas algunas veces, pues ni lo dudé y me puse a hacerlos. Estos shorts son del libro de patrones Japonés Happy Homemade Vol. 2. Se los hice de esta tela fabulosa que consigue de Miss Matatabi, la tela es canvas pero no es pesada. El diseño, la textura y los colores son perfectos para mi Gaby que resulta estar pasando por una Etapa de colores Pasteles últimamente.

Had a couple of field trips this month, Pumpkin patch at Pastorino’s with little Sebastian, you can spot him wearing a fish T-shirt, and with Gaby we went to San Mateo to a place called CuriOdyssey, here in the photo they were making bridges out of wooden sticks and load them with old batteries and see how much that would hold, then they tracked the weight and compared it with their friends weight numbers. They also have a small Zoo, they showed us a big snake, a Boa and explained to us what they eat, how long they live, and how they hunt.

Ya tuve que ir a un par de paseos este mes, a buscar calabazas a Pastorino’s con el pequeño Sebastián, lo pueden ver en la foto que tiene una camiseta con pescaditos, y con Gaby fuimos a San Mateo a un lugar llamado CuriOdyssey, aquí en la foto ultima estan pesando baterias con la ayuda de puentes que ellos hicieron con palitos de madera y cinta adhesiva, veían cuanto aguantaba y luego registraban ese número y lo comparaban a lo que otros compañeros habían hecho. También tienen un zoológico pequeño, nos mostraron una serpiente Boa y lo que comen, cuanto viven, como cazan. 

Then I went back to my sewing machine again, this time was something I have never tried before or done, sewing for somebody else besides my kids and myself.

The result was so nice, made this beautiful skirt for a friend and my son’s teacher Sulema. She’s Mexican and I have not met a Mexican who doesn’t love their country and culture and family so much, okay maybe I have met one maybe, maybe two, but that doesn’t say anything about Mexicans. Well, this woman loves her roots and embraces them, she loves her community and helps everybody. She’s amazing with kids, besides Gaby’s grandmother Astrid who loves kids and does wonders with them, Sulema also is to me a natural. We are very happy to know her and to be part of this nice friendship we have built in a few months.

So back to the skirt, she wanted something long, with flow and that she could wear anytime during the year. She’s being Frida Khalo for Halloween  and I thought of making a nice top for  her so she could wear it with the skirt. Went fabric hunting and found this “Calaveras” print with the right colors in it, specially Fuchsia, she loves hot pink!

Regrese a las costuras después de los paseos con los niños, esta vez fue con algo que jamás había intentado antes: coser para alguien que no sean mis hijos o yo.
El resultado fue tan bonito, hice esta falda color fucsia para  mi amiga y maestra de mi hijo, Sulema. Ella es Mexicana ( descendiente) y hasta la fecha no he conocido un Mexicano que no le guste su país, cultura o se avergüence de sus raíces, okay talvez si he conocido un par solamente pero esos no hacen diferencia ni tienen relevancia en el resto del país. Bueno, esta mujer ama su país, sus raíces y las acoge. Ama su comunidad y siempre ayuda a quien puede. Su gran habilidad son los niños, además de la abuela de Gaby, Astrid, quien ama los niños y hace maravillas con ellos, Sulema para mi también es alguien con un Don natural.

Estamos muy felices de conocerla y ser parte de esta bonita amistad que hemos construido en los últimos meses. 

De regreso al tema de la falda, ella quería algo largo con movimiento y que pudiera usar todo el año. Esta tela es Rayon y super suave y fresca. Ella ha decidido ser Frida Khalo para Halloween, y decidí hacerle una blusa que combinara con la falda. Busqué la tela para la blusa y la encontré, calaveras y flores en color fucsia…su color favorito!!

Here it is, Sulema wearing her Day of the Dead top. This was yesterday after going to the Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay, it ends today by the way.

It looks just beautiful on her and she says she got nice comments on it and was the talk of the day! It just gives me satisfaction to see something I made on somebody else different than my kids or myself. Below is an image of the top itself and it was unfinished still. I love it, I really would love to make one for me like this and with a similar fabric print, but only a person with a funky style like Sulema can really pull this one off. The skulls and flowers are a very bold design and print, we are not talking here about fine stripes, o polka dots or solids that are way easier to wear. This book has some gorgeous tops and bottoms, I want to try to make something for me, they look confortable and CHIC, clean cut and easy to combine, you could also altered them o mix and match, options are endless!

Aquí esta Sulema el dia de ayer usando su blusa que llevo al Festival de Calabazas en en Half Moon Bay. Se le ve tan lindo y dice que le dieron muchos piropos y fue la envidia del día! Me da satisfacción ver lo que yo hago en alguien que no sea yo, o mis hijos. Abajo es la foto de la blusa que aun no había terminado. Me encanta, yo quisiera hacer algo para mi con una tela así, pero solo alguien con el estilo de Sulema puede lograrlo. Las calaveras y flores son bastante atrevidas, es un “print” fuerte, no estamos hablando de rayas aquí, o puntitos, o solidos que son más fácil llevarlos puestos. Este libro tiene unos patrones divinos que quiero intentar hacer, son super cómodos y “CHIC”, cortes limpios y fáciles de combinar, también se pueden mezclar y alterar, es una infinidad de opciones.

Finally, made some tunics for Gaby, first two are out of Nani Iro fabrics. Last one is a plaid flannel from Discount Fabrics in San Francisco.

Finalmente, le hice unas túnicas a Gaby, las primeras dos son telas de Nani Iro. la última es un tipo franela cuadriculada de Discount Fabrics en San Francisco.
